BEAUTY'S MOON TREASURE E/T

Scroll down for 6/21/05 photos please

Photo left was taken less than 5 minutes after birth - photo on the right was when Treasure was 10 hours old.  To those of you visiting here and not familiar with Beauty's recent history, she underwent emergency colic surgery at Bend Equine Medical Center, Bend, Oregon on March 20, 2005 to resolve a 270 degree torsion and removal of the 2 lb. endrolith pictured below.

Because her surgery was unfortunately delayed by another facility, endotoxins developed which made her chances of recovery very poor and it was suggested that she be put down 9 days after surgery.  However, she responded to the familiar smells emanating from my barn jacket, stood up, nibbled some hay from my hands, drank a little water and manured.  Seeing her response and will to live, I made the decision to bring her home (a 3 hour trailer ride) the following day - March 30th to try and help her recover even though the odds were stacked against us.

With the devoted assistance and care given by my veterinarian, Chad Rabe, DVM and one  month of intensive care at home in her specially prepared stall, she continued to improve and look at the results!  Beauty does have moderate rotation in her right front foot but the outlook is positive with farrier assistance.  The photo - top right- shows Beauty still wearing her abdominal support necessitated because she developed a surgical hernia about 6 weeks before she foaled that will need future surgery to correct.  The photo here on the right is of Beauty taken on April 9th - 3 weeks after surgery.

So now you can appreciate why this foal is called "Treasure".  I want to take this opportunity to again publicly thank Elizabeth Kopplow, owner of Prince Moon Beam (sire of Treasure) for her tremendous support and encouragement throughout our 3 month ordeal.........I could not have withstood the emotionally and physical pressures without her.  Please visit her web - she's as fantastic an individual as her stallion is an exceptional stud.  http://foxtrotexas.com
